Which photo is better? Why?: My photo of the bolt is better because it honors the rule of thirds better and had a better focus point.
Why would you want to use a shallow depth of field?: I would want to use a shallow depth of field to stress the focal point of my picture, leading the viewer’s eyes to what is most important in the photo.
When/In what situation would a large depth of field be better?: A large depth of field would be better when the background of the photo is more important than the front, therefore a shallow depth of view would lead the readers eyes to the background.
